Why Fad Diets Don't Work (And What to Do Instead)

15 February 2026

Every January, a new diet takes over social media. Juice cleanses. Carnivore. 1200 calorie plans. They all promise the same thing: fast, dramatic results.

And sometimes they deliver — for about three weeks. Then the wheels fall off.

Here's why.

The restriction trap

Most fad diets work by cutting out entire food groups or slashing calories to unsustainable levels. You lose weight because you're eating less, not because of some magical food combination.

The problem? Your body is smarter than any diet plan. When you restrict too hard:

  • Your metabolism slows down to conserve energy
  • Hunger hormones spike, making cravings unbearable
  • You lose muscle alongside fat, which makes it harder to keep weight off
  • Eventually, you "break" the diet and often overshoot

This is the classic yo-yo cycle. Restrict, lose, binge, regain, feel guilty, restrict again.

The real issue: sustainability

The question isn't "will this diet help me lose weight?" Almost any calorie deficit will do that. The real question is: "Can I eat like this in six months?"

If the answer is no, it's not a plan — it's a punishment.

What actually works

Good nutrition doesn't need to be complicated. After working with dozens of clients as a Level 4 qualified Nutrition Coach, here's what I've seen work consistently:

Eat enough

Seriously. Most people who come to me are under-eating, not overeating. Your body needs fuel to function, train, recover, and live. A good nutrition plan starts with making sure you're eating enough.

Focus on balance, not elimination

No food is "bad." Pizza, chocolate, wine — they all fit into a healthy diet. The goal is a balanced plate most of the time: protein, veg, carbs, healthy fats. Not perfection.

Build habits, not rules

Rules are made to be broken. Habits stick. Small, consistent changes — like adding protein to breakfast or meal prepping lunches — compound over time into massive results.

Get support

A good nutrition coach doesn't give you a rigid meal plan and wish you luck. They help you understand your body, navigate real-life situations, and build a framework that's yours — not a photocopy of someone else's diet.
